AI can help in-house legal teams redefine their value proposition within the corporate ecosystem. Here's how.

Kill Bill – Newsletter

Hi there,

Wednesday was a day for the record books at PERSUIT.

In case you missed it, Shannon Thyme Klinger, CLO at Moderna, joined me in a special webinar to talk about how top GCs and CLOs (like Shannon) are embracing the AI revolution.

With over 1,500 registrations (a record for a PERSUIT webinar 🥇), it was clear that there are a lot of interest and questions on the topic.

I’ll take today’s newsletter to cover just a few highlights from my conversation with Shannon (although I highly suggest you take time to listen to the full conversation for yourself).

CLOs and GCs can’t afford to wait on the sidelines and see what happens.

In Shannon’s view, it won’t be long before consulting firms will be approaching boards and CEOs with promises of 30% or more savings in legal spend by using AI to redesign how legal departments do their work.

No, AI won’t replace in-house teams anytime soon.

But it’s critical for in-house leaders to lean into AI and large language models — rather than waiting on the sidelines — if they want to own their own future in this respect.

It’s also a tremendous opportunity to redefine the value proposition of the in-house legal team within the corporate ecosystem.

Here’s a short clip from the webinar that expands on Shannon’s thinking here.

Is ChatGPT a threat to in-house legal teams

Can a private instance of ChatGPT help address some of the risks of using AI within legal?

This was the question asked more than any other in the comments yesterday:

Is it possible to bring ChatGPT in-house? If so, how?

Using ChatGPT for legal tasks comes with its risks — like inadvertently putting IP into the public domain or the need for fact-checking to guard against AI “hallucinations” or misinformation.

Shannon’s team is working with Moderna’s CIO to create and refine its own private instance of ChatGPT.

A private instance means obtaining an enterprise licensing agreement with OpenAI to take ChatGPT behind the company’s firewall and wall off its communications with the outside world.

This is a promising workaround to privacy, confidentiality, and security concerns. And it has enabled Shannon’s team to leverage ChatGPT more effectively for use cases that would otherwise be too risky using the public version of ChatGPT.

Time is no longer the right proxy for value in legal.

The billable hour has long been the proxy for value in legal. 🤺

Now — finally — AI is interrupting that model (partnering with PERSUIT in the fight against evil!!).

How much of the work historically done by mid-level and junior associates at firms will be replaced by AI tools like ChatGPT?

We don’t actually know yet.

But that shouldn’t stop CLOs and GCs from asking their firms to start detailing how they are planning to (or are already using) AI to drive new efficiencies and value in their work for in-house teams.

Shannon’s even made it a requirement for firms participating in Moderna’s new preferred firm program.

Finally, we treated our audience to a very quick walk-through of how we’re incorporating AI and LLMs into our own PERSUIT product with our Proposal Analyzer.

Proposal Analyzer quickly summarizes proposal responses from multiple firms to highlight strengths, weaknesses, and key differences, bringing new precision, predictability, and speed to the legal sourcing process.

If you missed the demo, or if you didn’t and are still interested in seeing more, we’ll be hosting an upcoming webinar on Thursday, June 8th, 2023 at 12 p.m. EDT with PERSUIT’s AI experts.

You can find the registration details here.

We’re just getting started.

Wednesday’s discussion with Shannon was thought-provoking, scary and exciting — all at the same time!

AI-powered large language models like ChatGPT will revolutionize the legal landscape, but they also raise valid concerns. And given the overwhelming response from legal leaders, it is evident that the industry is hungry for answers and guidance.

I’m grateful that our team here at PERSUIT has the privilege of helping move this conversation forward. We’re excited to be developing more opportunities to do so in the near future.

If you have ideas for future webinar topics — or anything else for that matter — that you’d like to see us cover, I’d love to hear from you.

Hit reply and tell me!

Cheers,

Jim Delkousis
