Kill Bill – Newsletter

Hi there,

When we founded PERSUIT back in 2016, I had no idea the many ways people would eventually use our platform.

My first attempt was a platform that only managed requests for and placement of secondments.

Let’s just say that version of PERSUIT never caught on. Talk about an epic fail 😬.

And a whack to the ego.

But then we hit upon the need to help in-house teams elicit and compare firm proposals in an “apples-to-apples” comparison.

That’s when we started to get traction. 🏎️

In an industry where work was awarded almost entirely on existing relationships, with all the inherent biases that exist in those relationships, we started to bring rigour, transparency, objectivity, and choice to the process.

And then, in time, we saw people start using PERSUIT in ways I hadn’t anticipated.

Today, there are multiple use cases we see performed on a regular basis on PERSUIT.

(One of them — that my very fragile ego is grateful for — is secondments. 😆)

Our seven most popular use cases are:

  1. Single-matter/project RFP (manage risk by selecting the right firm ✅)
  2. Portfolio/multi-matter RFP (control costs by bundling work 💼)
  3. Hourly rate negotiation (that painful time of year again! 😩)
  4. Panel or preferred firm/vendor RFP (time for a panel refresh? 🤔)
  5. Secondment/temporary staffing (Yippee!! 💜)
  6. Negotiate an AFA for existing matters (surprised? 😯)
  7. RFI or survey (ask your firms anything 📝)

Just this week, our product team completed a design refresh of PERSUIT’s product homepage to make it easier to access all seven of these use cases.

We did a little write-up here showing off the new process:

I know product announcements aren’t always the most exciting things.

But this is one I’m really proud of.

It’s not really about a new set of software features. Anyone can ship features.

It’s about setting a new standard for the way GCs and their teams run the in-house legal department.

One that empowers you and your team to award work in a way that’s more fair, more objective, more diverse, more equitable, and more effective for everyone involved.

And one in which it’s hard to imagine how GCs and their legal departments could “do their job” without PERSUIT.

That’s what we’re working toward here at PERSUIT — and this update is just the latest way we’re working to make that vision a reality. 🚀

P.S. Speaking of use cases…

There’s a misconception that alternative fee arrangements can’t be used for complex legal matters. 🤔

I love what my friend and colleague Laura Spalding (Director of PERSUIT’s Legal Advisory Team) says about that. As she puts it:

“There’s no such thing as a matter that’s too complex for an AFA.”

Laura would know.

She and her team are the most knowledgeable people I’ve ever worked with on the topic of AFAs.

They spend their days advising in-house teams at some of the largest companies in the world.

This Wednesday, Laura is hosting a webinar where she’ll show you the AFA process for one of those sometimes-complex matter types: IP litigation.

If you’ve ever wondered how Fortune 500 in-house legal teams use AFAs for this specific matter type, this is a session not to miss.
